A hint of BEAUTY

Hello my long lost friends! Yet again, sincere apologies about my even longer hiatus away from Gossamer Wings. I have no excuse other than I’ve been busy. Utterly terrible, I know. But I’m back and feeling in the mood for beauty.

Lately I have been completely indulging in my interest for skincare, makeup, hair and nail polish. This not only includes the products that I like, but I’ve also been moseying around and discovering what skincare and makeup other people like. I’ve been being very nosy and excited to see what beauty products my friends like to use and why. Call me crazy, but I just find it damn interesting to see what people have in their makeup bags. Come on now, admit it, I know some of you do too!

So with beauty on my brain, I thought I would have a go at showing you nosy dames out there some of the things that I have in MY makeup and skincare arsenal. I have narrowed down my extensive collection of ‘stuff’ to 6 products.
So lets get into it shall we –

SIX beauty products I would cry about if they disappeared from the earth …..

Blistex Intensive Repair – Oh my days, this little blue pot holds liquid gold inside. I tend to get very dry lips in winter from the cold, wind, and also being inside around heaters. Whenever I do feel my lips getting really dry I always turn to my Blistex. Not only is it a medicated balm which soothes and restored a healthy moisture balance to your dry lips, but it also helps protect your lips from windburn to prevent any further dryness or chapping. Absolute MUST in these cold, wintery months.

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm – Formulated to help brighten and add some extra moisture to your skin, I use this every single morning mixed with my normal daily facial moisturiser. It leaves your skin so hydrated and glowing, which you need a little bit of in winter when your skin lacks some lustre as it isn’t seeing very much sun. It’s also great as a base for your makeup. It’s so hydrating that the pores in your skin won’t suck up your makeup throughout the day like it does sometimes when it’s lacking enough moisture.

Batiste Dry Shampoo – I sometimes marvel at what I actually did before dry shampoo was in my life! If you’re not on the dry shampoo bandwagon already, you must hop on that wagon immediately if not sooner. This incredible fine white powder spray will change your life. It comes in a can (as you can see from my amazingly professional photography) where you spray the powder all around your head into the hair, massage it in which allows the powder to soak up all the oil in your hair, and then simply brush it out. Voila! Clean hair void of any excess oil. And it adds a little volume too. Double whammy.

Bourjois Volume Glamour Ultra Curl Mascara – I don’t usually spend very much money on mascaras because I find the cheaper brands make excellent ones, which is the case with this Bourjois gem. This has been my favourite for a while, and it only cost me between $10 and $20. This mascara does absolutely everything that you want a mascara to do. It lengthens your lashes while also giving them lots of volume. The large, tapered brush head makes it super easy to apply and coat every lash. It also lasts on your lashes all day, no need for touching up at all. My go to for day and night.

Burts Bee’s Tinted Lip Balm – These are amazing if a) you can’t be bothered to maintain a strong coat of lipstick all day, b) you don’t want to slather any sticky gloss on either, but you still want a hint of colour just to brighten up your face. These little beauties are exactly what they say, a natural lip balm with a hint of colour. The one pictured is Pink Blossom, which is a gorgeous ‘just bitten’ pink. There are many colours to choose from and they’re just amazingly natural, moisturising, and add colour. Brilliant!

Kiehl’s Crème de Corps – When your skin is dryer than usual during the winter months, it’s important to have on hand a really great body moisturiser to prevent the skin on your body flaking and getting itchy. The Crème de Corps is one of Kiehl’s cult products, and as soon as you start using it you realise why. This is a lightly scented but SUPER hydrating body lotion which leaves your skin feeling so smooth and moisturised. It does leave a little bit of an oily sheen so I would recommend this to be used at night, but this is one of the best body moisturisers I’ve ever used.

So there we have it guys. Six fantastic products that I love and use ALL the time.

The Full Flannelette

Happy Sunday blog peeps!!

Unfortunately Gossamer Wings has been on a 2 week hiatus but we are now back in full swing. The reason for my absence from the interweb was that I went away last weekend to Kangaroo Valley with my closest friends. Lovely trip! But this girls getaway got me seriously thinking about something I’ve been trying to suss out for a while now. That being … full flannelette pyjamas!

You know the ones. The full length top and pants, matching print, flannelette pyjamas combo. When we are young, little and cute, we all love to get decked out in our flanny pj’s in winter. They cover all the bases you could ask for in pyjamas. High cuteness factor, tick. Snuggly soft and comfy, tick. Keep you warm from the cold, tick.

However as we get into our teens, we become ever more aware of what is ‘cool’ and what is ‘not cool’. I don’t know about you but prancing around in full flanny pj’s at year 10 school camp was deemed NOT cool at my school. So a lot of us, as we age, become too cool for school, and too cool for the full flanny. The pants alone were apparently still cool, but the full set was phased out of the bedtime wardrobe.

At least, this is what I thought …

It appears that there has been a secret society of flannelette pyjama wearers hiding under my nose for the past 10 years! Other than one of my very best friends who I know has been a lifetime supporter, I have never come across anyone else who still rocks the full matching set flannelette pyjamas in their twenties. I always would have a chuckle with her about how she was one of the only twenty-something’s who still tried to pull off this look. In an attempt to show her the sleepwear time warp she was stuck in, I did what any other person would do in this situation. I turned to Facebook! I put it to all the Facebooker’s out there and asked if anyone still wore a set of full flannelette pyjamas to bed.

Well well, to my surprise, I had about 20 replies of people sharing their love for wearing the full flanny pj’s as well. All of these self confessed flanny wearers are amazingly accomplished and sociable people in their 20’s, and they proudly own the fact that when they get into bed at night they are wearing matching cupcake patterned (or car patterned, there were male responders too) full set pj’s. Most of the comments behind the reason for still donning the full pj set to bed were that they keep you warm and their patterns are ‘fun and cute’. The practicality and adorable prints now seem to overshadow the dorky stigma that was previously attached to this bed wear in our teens.

Insanity! Have I just been totally out of the loop when it comes to bed wear trends? Is being a flannelette pyjama lover something that people don’t usually confess? OR is it an up and coming returning trend that I have uncovered?

Please tell me, can you confess to being a full flannelette pj lover? Or do you still think that they are for little kids and grandpa’s?

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a sudden urge for a Peter Alexander spree.

Where for art thou hangover

It’s a Saturday night and all of your besties are raring to hit the town for some beverages (or fifty) and you just can’t help but think to yourself ‘Ugh, tomorrow is going to be another wasted day in bed hungover’. WELL … it doesn’t have to be my Gossamer Winged peeps! I am somewhat renowned amongst my friends as the one who cannot handle her alcohol. I’ll have 3 drinks and be ill, not pleasant or ladylike at all. But I still love to hit the town and have fun with my friends like most young and excitable dames. So, here are some of my tried and tested tips and tricks to have a fantastic night without the hangover :

Drink water! If you don’t want to go the whole sober hog and you’ve decided to have a couple of drinks, make sure you have a glass of water in between every drink. The reason why we feel so awful with a hangover is primarily because the alcohol has sucked the watery daylights out of our bodies. So you need to drink a glass of water between every alcoholic drink that you consume to combat the dehydration and maintain your hydration levels.
Please note – when I say a couple of drinks, I don’t mean a hundred. This is most likely not going to work for you if you’re already hammered.

Eat before you go. As above, if you’ve decided you can’t be a total sober Sally when out on the town and you’re going to have a couple of drinks, make sure you eat a solid meal before you head out. By having some food in your stomach as a lining, the alcohol you’re drinking has something to hold on to which makes it easier to process by the body.

Have a drink in your hand. So you’ve decided you’re not going to drink any alcohol. Good for you! Power to the people! Now one of the hardest elements of the night is likely to be peer pressure. Unless you have absolutely amazingly cool friends that are supportive of your decision not to drink, you may encounter the age old, “Where’s your drink? Aren’t you drinking? Oh how boring. Come on, just have one. I’ll buy it for you!” From my own experience, the main reason for this is usually because the people around you aren’t confident enough in themselves to hang around a sober person while they’re intoxicated and joking around. They feel as though you are judging them while they are in their inebriated state. Ofcourse this is silly. Hey you’re just trying to have a fun time too!
SO in order to avoid this entire situation altogether, order your chosen non-alcoholic beverage (whether it be soft drink or soda water) and have a few of these throughout the night. Such a simple thing as holding a cup of liquid in your hand will ensure you enjoy a comfortable, hassle-free evening.

Designated Driver. One of the easiest, and definitely most convenient, ways of having a night out minus a hangover the next morning is to be the designated driver for the evening. Not only will your friends love you for being their chauffer for the night, but you’ll save SO much money that you would have spent on taxis.

Dance the night away. I find one of the most fun parts of going out with my besties is the dance floor. I don’t know many girls who don’t love to boogie, shake their body down to the ground, turn around and do the hokey pokie. Not only is dancing super fun, but it also distracts your mind if you’re worried about not drinking, AND it’s practically an exercise workout. Winning!

Piggy Bank. This is a given, but just incase you’re reading this hungover and need a little reminding, waking up hangover free is amazing for the body AND for the wallet. Think about how much money it costs to buy drinks, pay for club cover charges and for taxis. Astronomical! Now, think about that funky top you saw at the shops the other day you wanted to buy. That top could be yours after what you could save from just ONE sober night out. Oh yeah, you better believe it.

This is in absolutely no way an ‘Alcohol consumers be damned’ post here. I like to have the occasional drink like the rest of you. Especially paired with cheese, yum. However our bodies and minds need a break from the booze sometimes, and the above are just a few helpful ideas for such booze breaks. Not to mention all the glorious things we can do of a weekend when we wake up feeling refreshed and eager to live life.

Now if you gave up half way through the night and had an absolute boozer, don’t fret. You may wake up feeling incredibly hungover, but it doesn’t mean you have to look hungover.   Get up out of bed, scull 2 large glasses of water, and follow these AHmazing ‘how to hide a hangover with makeup’ tips.

In the spirit of Autumn

Greetings Gossies!! (I just made that up on the spot. Can you tell?)

Since my last post, I’ve been thinking not only about what to do in this wretched cold weather, but also about how well my current wardrobe is going to fare now that the seasons are a-changing. I really need to go on a spree and stock up on some winter woolies. My friends and I whinge to each other about this conundrum every year as the warmer months turn into a winter wonderland. But we all agree that until we can scrounge up enough cashola to go on wanted spree, we need to make do with what we’ve got.

With the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week hitting the town of Sydney this week, what better motivation and inspiration is there to conjure up new ideas and exciting ways to wear your old clothes and accessories. I stumbled across some amazing tutorials on Youtube by Liberty London who show us great techniques in wearing scarves. As I always say (write), scarves are the gateway item to the changing seasons. Well okay, I don’t always say (write) that. But I’ve always thought it! Check out the wizardry :

Rain, rain, go away!

So you’ve planned a holiday. You’re all psyched up to get away, relax and do some exciting new things …. only to finally be on your holiday and find that the weather is TOTALLY awful. The full shebang! It’s raining, it’s overcast, it’s windy, and just plain crappy. But you’ve waited for this holiday and damn it, you’re going to make the most of it.

Sound familiar? This happened to me only a couple of weeks ago. The rain has been hitting Sydney pretty hard in the past couple of weeks so I know that I’m not the only one pondering what to do on those awful cold and rainy days.

So what exactly are you going to do so that you still get the most out of your break (or weekend)?

Relax! First and most important activity. No matter what the weather, you need to let yourself forget all the stresses of your usually hectic everyday life and just chill out. Both physically and mentally. So try and sleep in a little bit, read a book or magazine, listen to some music, and let yourself enjoy not having to be anywhere or do anything unless you decide that you want to.

Read. There is nothing better than getting stuck into a great book while you’re on a break. Reading is generally something that a lot of people love to do but struggle to actually find the time to do so. It’s relaxing for the body and stimulating for the mind. It’s also great for passing the time quickly if you’re hoping to ride out the rain and catch a glimpse of sun. A winning break time activity for sure.

Pamper yourself.  Light some candles, crack out the aromatherapy bubble bath and take a long and glorious bath. Not only is a bath good for relaxing the body and for hydrating the skin with some glorious bath oils, but also it’s very calming for the mind. If you’re not quite in the mood for a DIY job, make an appointment at a Day Spa to enjoy being pampered the luxurious way.

Fun, indoor activities. For a fun but low key activity, hit up the movies. For a higher intensity activity, try something like TenPin Bowling. It’s a great group activity to consider if there are a few of you and you’ve all been sitting around bored.
If you happen to be in Port Douglas up the north of Queensland (like I was just two weeks ago), definitely hop along to the hilariously amazing cane toad racing at Ironbar  for a bit of fun. The cane toads are colour coded, placed on a long table, and the first toad to reach the end of the table earns their chosen jockey a prize. You can find these races being run at various pubs and taverns throughout Queensland.
OR if you live in Sydney, a bit of smashing comedy might tickle your fancy. The Comedy Store in Moore Park is the home of many a great comedy night. It’s run by the folks who bring us the Sydney Comedy Festival so you can expect some quality laughs from a night out here. It’s knee slappin’ good!

Dinner.  It’s pouring down with rain and you are low on activity ideas. So what do you do?  …. Eat! There are so many lovely cafes and restaurants hanging around these days. You never know, you might just stumble across a new fave lunch/dinner spot.

Do something in the rain. Go for a swim in the rain, it’s super refreshing and fun. Not if there is thunder and lightening going on though. Avoid the outdoor swim in these conditions. Being hit by lightening is not fun.

Is there anything in particular you enjoy doing on a bad weather day?

This little piggy went to market

If you’ve ever woken up early on a Sunday morning feeling fresh and wanting to get out into the beautiful day, you should consider making a visit to the Marrickville Organic Food and Farmers Markets.

When you arrive at the Addison Road Centre in Marrickville on a Sunday morning, you just cannot help but be excited for what’s in store. There are rows of stalls filled with luscious organic fruits and vegetables, free range eggs and meats. Each stall has a different range of produce so have a look around and take your pick, you will be able to find almost everything that is in season.  If you’re looking for something in particular, just ask. The farmers are very friendly and are always up for a chat or any questions you might have about their produce.

The Marrickville Organic Food and Farmers Markets is an amazing place to visit not only for the deliciously fresh, organic fruits and vegies. You can also find some incredible breakfasts and lunches made on the spot, a cup of coffee or a herbal tea, olive oils, breads and pastries, flowers and plants, and also beautiful natural and paraben free skin care. For those of you, like myself, who struggle a little bit in the restricted diet department, you’ll be thrilled to know that there are a plethora of options for those following vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and dairy free diets.

So why are the markets so good??
Not only is the produce fresh and organic, which we all know is the best kind of food for you, but also it’s cheap. A lot cheaper than heading down to your local Woolies. You can fill an entire green bag to the brim with fruits and vegetables for a mere $15. I don’t know about you, but I reckon that $15 for a week’s worth of food is money very well spent.

The parking here is relatively easy. You can park on site in the car park for free, or you can scout out the neighbouring side streets.

Also if you usually take your canine companion out for a walk of a morning, do not fret, as these markets are completely doggy friendly.

Tips on How to Shop the Markets

  • Cash and Bags: Make sure you come prepared. The majority of the stalls only accept cash, so fill up those wallets before you arrive. They also don’t provide plastic bags for your purchases (in keeping with the whole organic and sustainable vibe) so don’t forget to bring along some green bags.
  • Do a walk through: It’s easy to get a little overwhelmed by the amount of choices that stand before you. By doing a walk through you give yourself the chance to take in all the options and decide which ones you would like to hit up.
  • Ask questions: If you’re not sure about a specific product, or you’re looking for something in particular, the farmers and cooks are very friendly and will be more than happy to have a chat with you.

So where can you find these amazing markets –

Everybody loves a good quote

There are so many quotes on practically any topic you can think of. I came across this one and felt that this quote pretty much describes exactly what I’m attempting to do here. If it’s a published quote, it must have worked for some people right?
